From the late 1980s to 2005 I worked with major cellular phone companies through more than 15 Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms. My work was generator preparation and recovery. While almost every telephone company lost service during and after the storms, our systems stayed up because our generators worked. Often, we were the only telephone service available.
Customers were lined up at every sales office, out the door down the street and around the block desperate to communicate with family. We were the only game in town. The key is preparation.
• Make arrangements for fuel
• Invest in fresh batteries
• Test according to International Fire Code procedures
• Be aware, you cannot rent a generator after the storm passes. This YouTube video will help: Weekly Generator Operation & Testing
